Today’s sensitive data doesn’t stay in one place. It moves across users, applications, and teams. And too often, it moves unprotected.
The cost of that exposure is steep: compromised intelligence, delayed insights, fractured collaboration, and growing compliance risk. Commercial enterprises and federal agencies alike are feeling the brunt of needing to secure their most critical data.
That’s why we’re proud to lead Virtru’s $50 million Series D —and deepen a partnership that began seven years ago, grounded in a shared belief: data protection should be built in, not bolted on.
A Vision Built for Today’s Threat Landscape
We first met John and Will Ackerly in 2013. What stood out wasn’t just their technical depth—it was their clarity of mission. They believed every piece of data leaving or moving around an enterprise needed protection. That security should empower, not restrict, access and usability.
That conviction set the foundation for the Trusted Data Format (TDF): an open standard that embeds policy enforcement directly into the data itself, created by Will while he was at the National Security Agency (NSA). When we initially partnered in 2018, Virtru had built a simple but elegant product suite of email and file protection solutions powered by TDF. But the long-term vision was always much larger than just securing email and files alone.
Recognizing the growing imperative for enterprises to embrace a zero trust posture, Virtru’s platform began to evolve to meet a broader need: persistent, portable, data-centric security in and outside the organization.
A Platform Built for the Zero Trust Era
Today, that future is taking shape. The Virtru Data Security Platform (DSP) integrates directly into organizational workflows where sensitive data lives, across email, files, cloud storage, mission applications, enabling persistent, policy-based protection that travels with the data, even after it leaves the walls of one organization.
Virtru’s approach is gaining meaningful traction in both commercial and federal markets. The company is a critical partner to large enterprises like J.P. Morgan and Capital One, while also becoming a trusted partner to key customers in the national defense and intelligence community. Virtru is helping agencies implement zero trust mandates, secure cross-domain collaboration, and define the next era of secure intelligence sharing.
Looking Ahead
In an era shaped by AI, cross-border collaboration, and constant digital exposure, we believe Virtru offers a new paradigm for data security, one where protection, privacy, and control are embedded by design and travel with the data wherever it moves.
We are excited to continue our journey with John, Will, and the entire Virtru team as they work to redefine how sensitive information is secured around the world.
